Alistair Appleton age: How old is the Escape to the Country star?

Alistair Appleton is one of the faces of BBC One's Escape to the Country. The star has many passions outside of his TV work and has made a lot of career changes over the years.

The younger of two sons, Alistair was brought up in Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire. As a child he sang in the church choir at St Faith's.

By early adulthood he studied English Literature at Cambridge University and, on graduating, left the UK for Poland to write poetry. He later travelled to Germany to teach English and worked as a translator and journalist for Deutsche Welle television.

In 1999 he returned to the UK to launch his TV career, starring in House Doctor, Travel On, Cash in the Attic and Stately Suppers.

Alistair was born in Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent on February 12, 1970, making him 54 years old.

At 18 he went to university, where he came out as gay. However, he only fully accepted his sexuality when he later lived in Poland and Germany.

As of August 2021, he lives with his husband Daniel in a 1930s French sea captain's cottage in Newhaven, East Sussex.

On his website he said: "As well as my TV work on Escape to the Country, House Doctor and Cash in the Attic, I'm also an accredited psychotherapist and meditation teacher living down in Sussex with my potter husband, Daniel, and my dog, Ben."

"Following my own advice, I escaped to the country from London in 2013 and live near the sea in East Sussex.

"I'm a very enthusiastic Buddhist meditator and I've been teaching people how to meditate for more than 15 years."

He also opened up about how he beat anxiety in 2012, following a "very stressful breakup", saying: "At the time I didn't know it was anxiety, but I couldn't sleep, felt constantly tired and worried about everything.

"In the last 10 years, I've worked hard to understand and transform my anxiety."
