Saturday night's live coverage of the Olympics was brought to a halt by Gabby Logan as she announced that one of her fellow pundits would be leaving her role for a new position.

Gabby, who has been a constant presence on TV over the past eight days due to her duties as the BBC's main anchor for all athletics events from the Stade de France, made the announcement during her final shift of the Paris Games. She was joined in the studio by regular guests Michael Johnson, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Denise Lewis, as Team GB secured bronze in both the men's and women's 4x400m finals.

The subject of Gabby's surprise announcement was Denise Lewis. After expressing gratitude to her co-stars and the unsung heroes behind the scenes, Gabby shared some 'sad news' with viewers at home.

"I can't believe I'm even saying this," she said, revealing that former Olympic heptathlon champion Denise was departing her role on the BBC athletics team to assume the prestigious position of President of UK Athletics.

Grabbing the mic, Denise responded: "It's a sad farewell to my team; I've loved working with you guys, but yeah, it's time to try and help and develop the sports that has been so amazing to me. I would not have been in this position had I not dared to dream, had a club and the volunteers across the country who make these clubs what they need to be."

Meanwhile, Gabby had a hilarious clapback after she left viewers shocked by saying the phrase "cock-up" while on air. She had been chatting with the BBC Athletics panel, discussing the USA's performance in the 4x100m, as the favourites to win ended up being disqualified during the baton handover.

She told viewers at home: "OK, we've just had a kind of spoiler alert if you've just joined us on BBC One because Michael said, especially the way the USA cked up, so let's go back and see the whole of that 4x100m relay in the men's final."

After clearly seeing the shocked reactions from viewers at home, Gabby took to X, and said: "Good afternoon. Cock up sounds rude but it isn't. Cock, in the sense of this term, means 'stand up conspicuously', 'turn up at the edge', 'bend at an angle' etc.

"This is the sense of the early usage of the term 'cock-up' in the terms 'cock-up one's ears', 'cock-up one's nose,'" it continued.

"In the 17th and 18th centuries people were also often advised to 'cock up' their bonnets, eyes and even legs. The expression 'cock a snooker' also derives from that same sense of 'cock."
