Ex BBC presenter Huw Edwards steps down from another role after guilty plea

Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards has resigned from his two honorary positions at his alma mater in Wales.

The 62 year old newsreader admitted to three counts of creating indecent images of children, and it was later disclosed that he had been arrested over serious allegations in November 2023.

He confessed to possessing 41 indecent pictures of children - some of which were category A, the most severe type of child abuse images.

Following the revelation of his crimes, there have been demands for his awards and positions to be revoked. Among his accolades were a Bafta, the Royal Television Society (RTS), and the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC).

Now, a spokesperson for Cardiff University confirmed to the PA news agency that the former presenter stepped down from both his honorary professor title in the school of journalism, media and culture, and honorary fellowship,.

"He is no longer an honorand of the university," the spokesperson stated. "Our website listing of honorary fellows has been updated accordingly."

Huw graduated in French from Cardiff University.

It was also confirmed that he is no longer an honorary fellow of Swansea University.

A spokesperson for York St John University announced: "In light of the outcome of legal proceedings on Wednesday, July 31 2024, the university's honorary awards committee has taken the decision to rescind Mr Edwards' honorary award with immediate effect."

Additionally, a plaque at Cardiff Castle honouring an Interpretation Centre opening and featuring an audio guide with Edwards' voice has been removed.

The fallout from Huw Edwards' actions continues as his honorary fellowship at the Royal Welsh College Of Music And Drama was revoked following a unanimous vote by the college's board of trustees, as confirmed by a college spokesperson.

This series of professional setbacks comes in the wake of the BBC's demand for Edwards to return the salary he earned since his arrest in November 2023. The BBC board, striving to uphold public trust, stated: "There is nothing more important than the public's trust in the BBC; the BBC Board is the custodian of that trust."

Deliberations by the BBC board have focused on the circumstances around Edwards' admission to making indecent images of children and the broadcaster's subsequent handling of complaints and investigations related to Edwards before his resignation on April 22, 2024.
