BBC viewers were left unimpressed as they accused the broadcaster's Olympics commentators of "belittling" the competitors' achievements of winning silver and bronze medals.

It comes as the Team GB men's coulees four managed to bag a bronze medal, losing out to the USA and New Zealand in a tense race.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one BBC viewer penned: "Anyone else finding it a little cringey the expectation or arrogance around @TeamGB rowing medals from our commentary teams on @BBCSport? They are winning @Olympics medals which they have worked tirelessly for leave it #BBCOlympics."

A second remarked: "Couldn’t agree more, just turned off as I’ve had enough of the arrogance, entitlement and negativity. When did we become so negative about Olympic silver and bronze medals?

"Some of the commentary and interviews are painful to watch. Don’t ask them ‘what it is like to lose out’."

Another added: "Exactly right Rosey. 30 yrs ago, or 96 anyway, we were winning one gold I think, before lotto funding and all that. The silvers were behind some of the greatest athletes of all time, Roger Black taking silver behind Michael Johnson for example.

"Think there is some complacency creeping in. We were saying this last night - ffs if you even qualify for the Olympics you're amongst some of the best athletes in the world!"

"Couldn’t agree more, just turned off as I’ve had enough of the arrogance, entitlement and negativity," Mark penned.

While there was a backlash, other viewers concentrated on Team GB's achievements with the rowing. One wrote: " Congratulations to Helen Glover and the women's four for claiming silver at the Paris Olympics! A stunning performance by Team GB rowers, securing three medals overall."

Another shared: "What an incredible achievement for Team GB! Helen Glover should be proud of her performance, coming so close to making history as the first British mother to win rowing gold. Well done!"

Team GB's Helen Glover, Esme Booth, Sam Redgrave and Rebecca Shorten won a silver medal in the women’s four this morning in Paris.

The men's four, made up of Oli Wilkes, David Ambler, Matt Aldridge and Freddie Davidson, bagged the bronze medal just moments after the women.

Gover said of her team's win: "We put it all out there. We raced the plan we wanted to race; we raced together with so much heart.

"There can’t be regret looking back and knowing you did all you can."

She added: "No matter how we do, they (family and friends) are the people we go back to who love us no matter what. It’s really nice to have everyone out there and everyone who’s supported us from near and far."

The Olympics coverage is available to watch on BBC One from 8am daily and BBC iPlayer as well as Eurosport.
