John Cleese brutally pretended to forget who his Monty Python co-star Sir Michael Palin was, before mispronouncing his surname, when BBC Radio 2 presenter Romesh Ranganathan brought him up in conversation.

The actor and comedian appeared on Romesh's show this morning, and got into a cheeky conversation with fellow Radio 2 star Sally Boazman when he aimed the swipe at Palin.

It comes as the Monty Python cast members have been trading barbs recently, with Cleese previously branding Palin "boring" in another radio interview earlier this year.

Romesh got onto the subject while asking Sally if she had met John before, to which the traffic news reporter replied: "I have, we met outside and the first thing he said to me was, 'nice to meet you, you look very silly'.

Explaining his remark, John interjected: "She’s got this multicoloured beautiful dress on with all sorts of shades..." However, Sally mischievously hit back: "That’s not what the implication was John, the implication was that I looked silly."

"Yes, it’s the highest compliment," the screenwriter insisted, before Sally responded: "It didn’t endear me to you, I have to say!"

Host Romesh then got involved, telling his co-star: "Oh, wow! Sally you’ve gone in really two footed here on John Cleese!"

"Yes, she’s a bit like that, you know," John joked, which prompted Romesh to reveal that the actor's Monty Python co-star Sir Michael had shared a similar verdict on Sally when he first met her.

"Michael Palin said the same thing, you know, John," Romesh pointed out.

John quickly jibed, "Michael, who?", before pronouncing his surname incorectly, exclaiming: "Oh! Pah-lin," prompting a chuckle from Romesh.

The star didn't stop there, as he later boasted about looking more youthful "than the rest of the Pythons", despite the majority of the cast being "much younger than me".

It comes just months after Sir Michael fired back after being called “slightly boring” by John during an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, claiming that his Monty Python colleague “couldn’t have done without him”.

“You go back to Python, and I always played the boring character, but John couldn’t have done without me,” Michael swiped while being interviewed on This Morning.

“You had to have someone selling the parrot, or someone in the argument sketch to play off. So I think I’m going to continue to bask in John’s compliment that I’m boring. The more boring I can be the better.”
