Jay Slater search member describes treacherous conditions of area

This Morning host Dermot O'Leary has shared his poignant query amid the tragic search for missing teenager Jay Slater in Tenerife, following the discovery of a body in the mountainous region.

While speaking with LBC Radio's Tom Swarbrick on the ITV programme, alongside co-host Alison Hammond, the conversation shifted to the grim find on the Spanish island. Addressing the audience, Dermot revealed: "The civil guard says that whilst formal identification needs to take place, all evidence suggests the remains are those of Jay Slater, who might have suffered an accident or fall."

Tom disclosed details from his discussion with a local newspaper editor, stating: "[They have] the same questions that are on the front page of one of the British newspapers today, which is basically, 'Why wasn't this done sooner, given that unfortunately this body was located quite close to where the last phone signal seemed to have come from?'"

He continued, relaying the editor's insights: "The answer from this newspaper editor is the terrain is horrendous. Unless you've been there you just don't know how hilly and craggy and rocky it is. It seems as if unfortunately from the road they were searching on, the body was found some 600ft below which would indicate as the police are suggesting an accident or fall of some kind."

Tom confessed: "It's the worst possible news for the family, isn't it? And I just think everyone's sympathies are with Jay's mum, because it's horrific," reports the Mirror.

Alison agreed: "It's every mum's nightmare."

Dermot was curious about the search, explaining: "Isla, from the show, went out there. I was talking to her off-mic last week and I said, 'Why haven't they found him?'" He added: "She said until you're there it's hard to appreciate just how hostile that environment is to try and find someone, it's a needle in a haystack."

The police released a statement revealing: "The mountain rescue and intervention group of the Civil Guard has located the lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search.

"Given the complexity of the case, the discovery has been possible thanks to the incessant and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard during these 29 days, in which the natural space was preserved so that it would not be filled with curious onlookers."

The statement continued: "All indications indicate that it could be the young British man who has been missing since June 17 in the absence of full identification. The first investigations reveal that he could have suffered an accident fall in the inaccessible area where he was found."
