Outlander: Season 7 part 2 teaser for STARZ drama

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander.

’s Tobias Menzies has proudly taken ownership of some of the early “kinki-ness” when it comes to Frank and Black Jack.

Actor Tobias Menzies had a job unlike any other in the period drama as he played two completely different characters, 200 years apart.

One of them was ’s (played by ) first husband, loving and well-educated Frank, and the other was the sadistic villain Black Jack, an ancestor of Frank’s.

Outlander is well known for its X-rated scenes with Claire and (), usually the stars of such raunchy moments.

However, there have been times where Frank and Black Jack were the main focus of these scenes with Menzies taking credit for some of their creations.

Back in 2014, a fan of the time travelling series questioned on X, formerly , if the 49-year-old had any part in coming up with these intimate moments.

In response, Menzies replied: “Yes, I’m afraid all that kinda kinki-ness tends to be my idea…ho hum.”

He then went on to explain in more detail to The New York Times the part he had to play, particularly in the horrific season one rape scene with Black Jack and Jamie.

“One of the nice things about being on the show since the beginning is that you can help build up a rapport with the writers, and a lot of this material comes out through conversation.”,  Menzies said.

“There was a writer on the show, Ira Behr, who wrote quite a lot of the Black Jack stuff, and he brought a fair amount of twisted-ness to it.

“A fair amount of sexual perversity. I remember him wanting to be very rigorous about the why — why Jack was doing what he was doing. The psychology. His agenda.”

Outlander: claire husband frank randall tobias menzies

“That led to the stuff toward the end of season one, at Wentworth Prison, impersonating Claire, whispering Claire’s name.

“It was about making it not just ‘I want to rape Jamie,’ but more complicated. I didn’t want him to be a central casting  baddie.

“By trying to be as clear and particular about your choices, it can result in unusual decisions, and I think that’s a good example of that, because it’s a very weird moment. You’re not quite sure what’s going on, but it has an emotional truth about it.”

Menzies then went on to explain that he didn’t want Frank to be “too fussy” as he was a “passionate” man and “definitely a match for Claire”.

So while Claire was always intended to be with Jamie, the idea was to still make Frank a “genuine proposition” to make her decision “even meatier”.

Referring to a moment in season three, he added: “The scene where Frank touches Claire’s pregnant belly and she sort of flinches, and then they have the argument with the throwing of the ashtray, that definitely came out of collaboration with the writers and directors.

“We had plenty of conversation about that dance, and it was more than we could have come up with separately.”

As fans of the long-running drama will already know, it didn’t end well for either Frank or Black Jack.

Frank was tragically killed in a car accident in season three after arguing with Claire about divorce and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) about moving to England.

Then in the same series, Black Jack was killed at the hands of Jamie during the Battle of Culloden.

Outlander is available to watch on Starz.
