Silent Witness: Jack proposes to Nikki

BBC's Silent Witness reached the conclusion of series 27 on Tuesday (February 13) which took viewers on a rollercoaster ride but equally left them confused. The finale was part two of a story which saw the team attempt to get to the bottom of a grisly mystery after eight bodies were discovered entombed underground in the King’s Cross Station Museum.

They discovered a prolific serial killer had been operating in the capital 20 years prior and their investigation had numerous twists and turns before they resolved it. Nikki Alexander (played by Emilia Fox) had her hands full trying to to identify the bodies while Jack Hodgson (David Caves) was tasked with helping the police to look into historic missing persons cases.

Although they eventually figured out the killer fans were not completely convinced. While some loved the finale, others claimed to be confused by plots they believed weren’t wrapped up and others said it made “no sense”.

They took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their feelings. A user with the handle @PedanticDC commented: "A garbled final episode of Silent Witness, so many plot holes and bizarre bits. The only sensible bit was the proposal at the end. Next series, please! #silentwitness"

@WriterCHalliday enquired: "Anybody else totally confused by #SilentWitness ?? But I keep watching!" @moneyandmedia exclaimed: "Sorry, that #silentwitness didn't make sense. If Carl hadn't told Keith that he'd happened to kill eight people in King's Cross, why would Keith have needed to bump off Russell??"

@squeezyjohn had a lot of questions asking: "Hang on #SilentWitness … what about the bloke in Russell’s house he was caring for (his dad)? Did he just evaporate? Is he dying of starvation in his bed?… bloody awful plot gap."

However, some fans were satisfied with how the story concluded.

@Hayley_Lyellfan gushed: "What a fantastic series of #SilentWitness this has been. I've loved every series, but S27 has been my absolute favourite. Fab crime stories, great guest stars and of course amazing chemistry and big relationship development between Nikki and Jack.Big congrats to all involved."

Meanwhile, @CricketMadAlice enthused: "#SilentWitness omg omg omg!!!!! What a series! As a Jakki fan I’ve loved it, and as a drama fan I’ve loved it!! It’s been amazing @EmiliaFox @MrDavidCaves @BBCOne."

Aside from the drama of the investigation Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson had a happy ending to the season.

During the final moments of the episode, Jack appeared at Nikki's home and joked about filling up a room as a lodger. Nikki played along with the scenario and took him on a mini-tour around her house.

Initially, the pair talked about moving in together, but Jack then spoke about commitment and gave Nikki an evidence bag. It was then revealed to be a ring, much to Nikki's shock.

Jack said: "I can't imagine a day without you. Will you marry me? Will you?" to which Nikki planted him a loving kiss and said: "Yes," before the screen faded to black.

Silent Witness is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
