Black Myth: Wukong has dozens of bosses that you need to fight in order to conclude the epic saga. However, there's one that will truly test your mettle. It's not a battle, but a strict stat check. Here's our guide to help you tame the Feng-Tail General in Black Myth: Wukong. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.

Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General guide - How to tame the giant beetle boss

The Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General is a giant beetle boss found in Mount Huaguo in Chapter 6. It, along with the other massive beasts in this region, reward you with the mythical rarity Monkey King/Heaven's Equal armor set. As such, subduing this gargantuan insectoid is a requirement if you want to progress to the end of the game.

Feng-Tail General QTE and stat check mechanics

The Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General encounter resembles what you've seen in other adventure games or RPGs, such as in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Instead of dealing damage to a boss, you need to have attributes that are high enough to survive the ordeal.

As for the mechanics themselves:

  • The Feng-Tail General spawns at the western part of Mount Huaguo, at the marshlands and edge of the large lake. The closest fast travel point is the Mantis-Catching Swamp shrine.
  • From its spawn point, it will repeatedly jump to multiple areas while following a path that goes from west to east. When it reaches the eastern edge of the map, it will respawn at the western area again.
  • Rather than fighting the boss, you need to fly to it using the Somersault Cloud. Land on top of it, then go to its head to start the QTE sequence.
  • The first stat check is for your stamina, and the second, which is harder, is for your health.

Tips to boost your health, stamina, and damage reduction further

There are several ways to improve your chances if you want to tame the giant beetle in Black Myth: Wukong. Here are some tips:

  • Try to find all Celestial Pills (HP/mana/stamina upgrades) in various regions.
  • If you have a lot of Mind Cores, talk to the Xu Dog NPC. He has the Make Medicines: Celestial Medicines function that lets you boost your health, stamina, and defense further.
  • Some curios and spirit forms provide stat buffs when equipped.
  • There are drinks and soaks that improve your HP and damage reduction considerably after sipping from your gourd/flask.
  • Reallocate some of your talent points to increase health, defense, and Four Banes resistance.
  • The Steadfast talent from the Rock Guai transformation also helps increase defense.
  • The Gold Suozi Armor from the Gold Armored Rhino boss grants extra defense and health. However, the full craftable armor set from the Chapter 5 secret area offers higher defensive bonuses.
  • You might want to craft some additional medicines as well:
    • Longevity Decoction - Increases maximum health for a long duration; requires 1x Licorice and 1x Fragrant Jade Flower.
    • Tonifying Decoction - Increases maximum stamina for a long duration; requires 1x Celestial Pear and 1x Licorice.
    • Evil Repelling Medicament - Increases damage reduction for a long duration; requires 1x Licorice and 1x Jade Lotus.
    • Body-Cooling Powder - Removes burnt state and increases burn resistance for a short duration; requires 1x Fragrant Jade Flower and 1x Jade Lotus.

The stamina check

The first thing you need to do is fly to the Feng-Tail General's spawn point, or to its next jumping point. When ready, dismount and land on its back. Then, press the button prompt while you're on its head. When you see the next prompt, press and continue holding the button. The giant beetle will jump three times, and the whole process will gradually drain your stamina.

Note 1: If you run out of stamina or let go of the button, your character will fall down.

Note 2: If you try to start this QTE when the beetle is near the end of its predetermined path, it will jump through the invisible wall at the edge of the map, but you'll be left behind. That's why it's better to start this sequence near its spawning grounds.

The health check

Now comes the hard part for those attempting to tame the Feng-Tail General in Black Myth: Wukong. This occurs after the giant beetle has jumped three times. You have to press the button once, then press and hold it when prompted. Your character will grab hold of the beetle's antennae, as flames erupt and slowly deplete your HP. You have to continue holding on for roughly 10 seconds, which triggers a cutscene. If your HP runs out, your character will perish and you have to try again.

Note: Before pressing the button for the next QTE/stat check, it's a good idea to use a bunch of consumables, such as the aforementioned Longevity Decoction and Evil Repelling Medicament. Likewise, we can't confirm if the Destined One does suffer from fire damage (which means burn resistance should work), but we popped a Body-Cooling Powder nonetheless just to be safe.

In any case, succeeding here nets you the Golden Feng-Tail Crown headgear, which grants +30 maximum mana and +60 defense. That does it: you've just tamed the Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General. Now, you just need to take out the next boss to acquire the full mythical armor set and the Jingubang staff.
