Kraven the Hunter, Sony Pictures' Marvel superhero spin-off starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been a box office bomb on opening weekend.
Taylor-Johnson played Spider-Man's notorious foe in the lead role as the film raked in way below expectations with just $11 million USD at the box office for opening weekend. The staggering numbers have garnered the film's title of being the worst debut for any Sony-Marvel film. Earlier this year, Madame Web made $15.3 million USD. Kraven the Hunter also landed some of the franchise's lowest-ever critic and audience scores with a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and "C" grade on CinemaScore.
The film was Sony's third Spider-Man adjacent adaptation of the year. In October, the studio released Venom: The Last Dance starring Tom Hardy. The franchise has proven to be commercially successful, but it still did not live up to expectations. The studio's stumble began with Jared Leto's Morbius back in 2022. Due to Kraven's delay, it cost upwards of $110 million USD to produce. The film went up against Warner Bros. anime fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Moana 2, Wicked and Gladiator II.
