Serious helicopter crash with husbandBBC presenters Mike Smith and Sarah Greene were gravely injured in a helicopter crash in Gloucestershire in 1988.
Greene sustained multiple injuries, breaking both legs and an arm when the helicopter piloted by her partner crashed into trees near their intended landing site. Smith attributed the accident to a power failure in their Robinson R22 Beta helicopter.
Smith, who had purchased the two-seater aircraft after learning to fly earlier that year, suffered a broken back and ankle.
After a four-week hospital stay, Sarah returned to her co-hosting duties on Going Live! with Phillip Schofield, still sporting plaster casts on her legs.
In the wake of the near-fatal accident, Mike proposed to Sarah. The TV and radio personality was absolved of any responsibility for the crash by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, who found no fault with the helicopter.
Relationship with Mike SmithSarah Greene sparked a relationship with Radio Breakfast Show star and Top of the Pops presenter Mike Smith in the 1980s. In 1989, a year after their serious crash, the pair got married and lived together in London.
The former Top Of The Pops presenter passed away aged just 59 due to complications after undergoing major heart surgery on August 1, 2014.

Rob is a retired British racing driver and team owner and was also one of her late husband's oldest friends.
Sarah credited her late husband with playing a significant role in initiating their relationship.
"I sort of know Mike is pulling so many strings in my life," Sarah said on the My Time Capsule podcast. "He has undoubtedly been responsible for me meeting my beloved who was one of his oldest friends, who waited a certain amount of time but did keep leaving messages on the answering machine. I thought he was just being kind."
She went on to explain how she soon received a message telling her: "Then I got a message almost saying 'For God's sake, Greeno, Robb is trying to make contact with you because he actually wants to take you out, not because he's kind.
"So will you just get off your arse and go and answer the phone next time it rings!'"
Sarah finally contacted him and a 'whole new conversation started'. She said: "I'm sure, and Robb is very sure too because it's a very strange situation."
At first, the presenter was 'terribly worried' and asked Robb whether he thought it was strange going 'into the house and seeing all these pictures everywhere of Mike.'
