Black Doves, a high-stakes drama series, delves into the perilous lives of a sophisticated spy organisation that has infiltrated the British Government.

The thrilling series, previously labelled as 'Netflix's answer to Slow Horses', features Keira Knightley as Helen, a politician's wife who is in reality a Black Dove, and Ben Wishaw as her hitman companion Sam.

The Black Doves is an espionage group that serves the highest bidder rather than any specific government body. It appears to be led by a woman known only as Reed (Sarah Lancashire), who guides Helen as she seeks to unravel the truth behind the murder of her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji).

Helen is also wedded to idealistic politician Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), who is rumoured to be the next Prime Minister, reports the Daily Record.

Black Doves, already renewed for a second season, resolved many loose ends but left viewers with numerous questions. Let's examine what these unresolved plot threads could imply for season 2.

In the final episode of the first season, we see a woman lounging on Reed's sofa, enjoying a festive beverage.

This woman is actually Marnie (Molly Chesworth), the nanny responsible for Helen's children.

Although we only see her a few times throughout the series, it's evident that Marnie is close to the family and trusted by Helen.

However, the reveal that she knows Reed indicates that Marnie is actually another Spy - likely a Black Dove.

When Helen fairly easily bests Dani (Agnes O'Casey) in a fight to become the next Mrs Wallace, she angrily tells Reed not to “send the work experience girl” next time.

However, it seems Dani might have simply been a decoy all along, with Marnie being the real agent waiting in the wings to take her place if she becomes compromised.

Show creator Joe Barton has since confirmed to GQ : “She's been spying on them the whole time.”

In a huge final twist, Sam sacrifices himself for Helen when he shoots notorious gangster Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman) and her son Trent (Angus Cooper).

He does so to prevent Helen from becoming a vengeful killer and totally compromising herself.

Now, Sam is likely to have the whole Clark crime family coming after him in season 2, which could also spell trouble for Helen in her new high-profile role as the Prime Minister’s wife.

Speaking to the same publication, Barton confirmed: “It's all about friendship, really, and how much they love each other. So yeah, the ramifications of that action will play out.”

Will Sam take the offer to be Hector's triggerman?

The finale also teases a potential reunion between Sam and Michael (Omari Douglas), though their love story is put at risk once again when Hector (Luther Ford) propositions Sam to become his triggerman.

Sam, after completing one final job, is now a wanted man following the murder of the Clark matriarch and her son. He may consider Hector's offer for more protection by aligning with the gangster.

During an interview that leads her to the Black Doves, Helen is questioned about Bonnie Weir, her stepsister. Bonnie has been incarcerated since 2004 for murdering her biological father and Helen's stepfather.

Helen, who left the country for a decade around the time of the murder, also lost her biological mother. It's suggested that Helen's stepfather was responsible for her mother's death, but the 'true' circumstances remain unclear.

It's possible that both Helen and Bonnie sought revenge and planned to kill him, with only Helen managing to escape. Alternatively, Helen might have killed her stepfather and pinned the crime on Bonnie.

While this storyline isn't fully developed in the first season, it's likely that the second series will delve deeper into Helen's past.
