Earlier this year, frontman Dave McCabe opened up to NME about the bandâs biggest hit, âValerieâ. While it was a success for The Zutons in 2006, it gained a whole new level of popularity when Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse released a cover the following year.
He told NME in Does Rock âNâ Roll Kill Braincells?! that the cover came about after Winehouse told him to âfuck offâ, saying: âI walked out of the house in the strop, and she followed me and pleaded: âPlease come back. Iâm sorry I told you to fuck off,â he continued. âI really like that songâ [âValerieâ]. We went back in and carried on drinking.â
‘The Big Decider’ was produced by the legendary Nile Rodgers and Ian Broudie. Back in 2021, NME spoke to McCabe during the process of working with Rodgers, saying he was âbringing the best out of us as a band.â
âI thought, âIs he just gonna turn up and start playing rink-a-dink-a-dink disco stuff?â,â he said. âBut he hasnât played a note. Heâs just suggested things and let us build on it.â
