Hit BBC noughties children's series set to return for revamp after two decades

BBC Breakfast: Sandi Toksvig tells Jon Kay not to mess with her

After nearly two decades since it last aired, the hit children's series Balamory is set to return, the BBC has confirmed.

Balamory was a fictional town with brightly coloured houses and featured residents such as Miss Hoolie, PC Plum, Josie Jump, Edie McCredie and Archie the Inventor.

Kate Morton, Head of Commissioning 0-6 for BBC Children’s and Education said: "A whole new generation will discover and enjoy Balamory as we bring families together with this new update for CBeebies.

"It will be a real treat for parents who grew up with the show to now introduce their little ones to the brightly coloured world getting to know a host of old and new characters together."

The BBC has commissioned the revamped version for two new series on CBeebies, consisting of 10x14 episodes.

The original series ran from 2002 to 2005 and was a huge hit with both children and parents thanks to its bold and eye-catching colours and learning aspects.

The show was a huge success and along with getting in two million viewers a week in the UK, it even went on to win a BAFTA award.

After four series and a whopping 254 episodes, the show was cancelled back in 2005, but news of its return will have parents excited about their children being able to watch the series they grew up on.

Julie Wilson Nimmo, who played the iconic Miss Hoolie has expressed her excitement about the iconic show's return.

She gushed: "It’s the craziest and best news ever that Balamory is coming back.

"I seriously think this is bigger than the Oasis reunion. Everyone I know loves the show and has been missing it."

It's not yet known whether the show will have some of its popular stars return or not, but the BBC are hoping for some of its original stars as well as some fresh new faces.

Balamory will return to CBeebies in 2026.
