Martin Lewis issued a crucial warning that could potentially benefit 800,000 people in the UK on Tuesday's This Morning.

The MoneySavingExpert legend, 52, was discussing winter fuel payments and pension credit when he made an urgent appeal to viewers at home.

Martin stated: "There are 1.2million pensioners claiming pension credit, there are thought to be more than 800,000 eligible pensioners on low income who should be claiming pension credit who aren't."

He further added: "800,000 of the poorest people in our country, the poorest old people, who should be getting winter fuel payment won't get it because they don't claim [pension credit]."

He urged everyone, regardless of their age, to help low-income pensioners by informing them about these benefits. He said: "You can change that, whatever age you are, if you know a low-income pensioner, we all collectively as a community have a responsibility to try and make sure they get what they're due.

"Don't force it, it's just a polite word: 'By the way, have you heard about that winter fuel payment, that pension credit, have you checked whether you're eligible?' If you think they're on a low income!"

Martin encouraged people to check their eligibility, even if they might not qualify, adding: "There's nothing wrong with checking and finding out you're not eligible. Do not do it because you're scared you'll be told no, that isn't a problem, it's perfectly fine!"

Before his segment on This Morning, Martin took to Twitter, now X, announcing: "Tomorrow on @thismorning I've doing a winter bills phone in - on energy bills, fixing, standing charges, winter fuel payments, pension credit, warm home discount and owt else you want to ask me. If you've got a question just suggest it by reply (and the team may get in touch)", reports the Mirror.

It comes as Martin recently encouraged UK households to stock up on stamps ahead of the Royal Mail price increase. The presenter warned of the imminent 30p hike for first-class stamps coming in October, just in time for the seasonal post. The cost of sending festive wishes is set to soar as the 30p jump comes into effect on October 7.

Martin said: "For years, every time stamps go up in price I've suggested people stock up and bulk-buy in advance, as provided the stamp doesn't have a price on it and instead just says the postage class, it's still valid after the hike. You may as well stock up now, even if it's just for cards for the next few Christmases."

This Morning continues on weekdays at 10am on both ITV and ITV X.
