All Creatures Great and Small: New trailer for Channel 5 show

All Creatures Great and Small is back on Channel 5 soon with Nicholas Ralph and Rachel Shenton returning as James and Helen Herriot. As they navigate parenthood, James is busy with his work in the RAF while Helen is holding the fort back at Skeldale House with their new baby.

Just before James went away, Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) hired a new vet to help out - Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose). The new series will see Siegfried warming to Carmody as he proves himself worthy.

James Anthony-Rose has worked across theatre, film and radio across his career and he has previously starred in Belgravia and Pennyworth. Viewers may have also spotted him in Angela Black and Slow Horses.

His first major small-screen role was as Richard Carmody, and he has just landed a new job in the series Masters of the Air. Away from TV, he is part of the Peter Blue show at Lambeth Fringe.

The one-person storytelling show will air on September 29 and he is extremely proud of his role. The star is on Instagram but he does not give much away about his personal life.

His social media grid is instead full of artistic snaps as he appreciates the beauty of the world around him.

Ahead of the new series of All Creatures Great and Small, the actor opened up about how he approached playing the bookish Richard Carmody.

Speaking to Masterpiece he said: "The production put me in touch with Andy Barrett, who’s the on-set vet consultant, and who actually worked with Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair as well, the character that Siegfried is based on.

"So, Andy took me around a farm and I met a couple of horses and a cow and some calves, and we listened to their heartbeat. So yeah, in that sense, I was getting the basics in so far as what a vet needs to know with regards to how to use a stethoscope and things like that.

"But I thought it was important as well, that I sort of learned that and then unlearned it almost for playing Carmody, as he’s practically not very good.

"He doesn’t really hold his stethoscope in the right way, and he has to look a bit clumsy at first.

"But I was also conscious of making sure that I didn’t make the animals feel uncomfortable around me because it was important that we work within safe parameters and that they didn’t feel uneasy around this strange person who clearly didn’t know what they were doing."

He admitted how he, like his character, cannot drive in real life - something which Carmody tackles when he first joins the team.

He added: "I don’t know if the writers knew that I couldn’t drive and worked that into the storyline.

"It probably made their lives harder by adding in that because of course, I’m seen to be driving, but of course, it’s all done on low loaders.

"I’d always maintained that I couldn’t trust myself in a car. But having said that I have since tried my hand at it and I’m currently getting lessons."

All Creatures Great and Small starts on Channel 5 on September 19
