The Yorkshire Vet's Peter Wright calls in help for procedure 'first' to avoid 'disaster'

TM: Peter Wright thought The Yorkshire Vet 'wouldn't work'

In the latest instalment of Yorkshire Vet, Channel 5 viewers saw fan-favourite vet Peter Wright learn how to handle a new piece of technology.

With a new CT scanner being installed in the practice, Peter got to grips with it as he needed to use it on an upcoming patient.

He confessed: "This is a first for me, it's the first time I've personally been involved with a CT scan.

"I'm from an era where CT scans weren't commonly used. They say you can't teach old dogs new tricks but under supervision by Louise, I'm going to prove different this morning!"

After a few practises, it was time for him to use the new piece of equipment on a nine-year-old Labrador called Fin.

Viewers learnt Fin had a problem with his left eye which was starting to bulge.

Having an inspection, Peter could visibly see the issue as his owner explained it was getting bigger.

Highlighting that something was developing behind the eye, Peter explained they'd do a CT scan, where they discovered a mass in the dog's skull.

Peter was worried it may have ventured into the brain as he sent the results off to get inspected by an expert.

During the episode, Channel 5 viewers saw Peter perform surgery to try and remove the tumour.

He said: "Over the years, I've had to take many eyes out but this is the first time I've had a tumour to do with behind the eye.

"So despite the fact that we have fantastic visual aid of CT technology, I'm still slightly apprehensive as to what we're going to find and the extent of this mass."

As the procedure got underway, Peter removed the entire eye to be able to feel the scope of the tumour.

However, Peter highlighted a potential issue which he described as being a "disaster" after realising the damage he could cause to the optic nerve.

Peter said: "This isn't a straightforward procedure, I may ask for a little bit of extra help here so we can get it just right."

Deciding to get another vet into the surgery, they both worked together to be able to free the eye without causing more damage.

The vet said: "I think that's it, we've got it! I think we may of been lucky here!"

When the surgery was finished, Peter called it a rollercoaster.

He added: "We've got the mass out, but it's not clear whether we're out of the woods yet.

"We've got to hope we didn't put too much traction on the optic nerve to cause problems in the other eye."

Luckily, viewers learnt Finn was healthy after losing the eye with the tumour and the procedure didn't impact his healthy eye.

The Yorkshire Vet is available to watch Tuesdays on Channel 5 from 8pm.
