BBC issues statement on Zoe Ball's Radio 2 future as fans fear surprise exit

Gaby Roslin steps in for Zoe Ball

BBC Radio 2 have shared a statement surrounding the future of Zoe Ball presenting her breakfast show. The 53-year-old radio host normally fills the ears of the nation each morning from 6.30am.

However, for the last five weeks she has been absent from her presenting role, with the likes of Scott Mills and Gaby Roslin stepping in to fill her shoes. Now, following speculation from fans that Zoe might not return at all, the BBC have confirmed the host's future on the show.

A Radio 2 spokesperson told Express.co.uk: "Zoe will return to the Radio 2 Breakfast Show later this month."

Zoe was last on her breakfast show on August 8. She had returned just four days earlier from a previous lengthy absence.

Speaking on August 12, Scott addressed Zoe's absence as he told listeners: "If you've just put us on this morning, it's Scott Mills in for Zoe for the next few weeks. I'm sending you all my love Zo' as are the team."

Fans have been coming increasingly concerned with Zoe's long absence from the BBC show - and it seems she will still be off for at least another week.

Sharing a screenshot of the BBC Radio 2 website, showing that Scott Mills is set to be presenting next week on September 9, one savvy social media user Tweeted: "Scott is doing the breakfast show again next week in for Zoe.

"That's now 5 weeks that he's covered for her. I feel an announcement is coming that Scott will have the breakfast show full time. Hope Zoe is ok [loveheart emoji]."

While a reason has not been given for Zoe's absence, the BBC presenter has faced quite a heartbreaking year, with the loss of her mum and needing emergency dental treatment.

Back in April, Zoe took time off work as she emotionally announced the death of her mum, Julia Peckham. The late mother died from advanced pancreatic cancer aged 75.

Just a few days after losing her mum, Zoe's shared further grief as she marked the anniversary of her ex's death. Antiques Roadshow cameraman Billy Yates tragically took his own life in 2017 at the age of 40, not long into his relationship with Zoe.

And then, in June, Zoe shared that she had been forced to seek an "emergency rescue" after having a medical mishap, resulting in more time off work. The 53-year-old BBC presenter shared that she had lost a tooth on her Instagram stories and rushed to a dental professional to have her smile fixed.
