BBC Breakfast's Charlie Stayt 'called out' on air as co-host makes confession

Charlie Stayt 'forgot' the Match of The Day theme tune

BBC Breakfast star Charlie Stayt was left red-faced on Thursday's instalment of the show as his co-star called him out.

With Match of the Day celebrating turning 60, Charlie highlighted how iconic the theme tune is as it started to be played into the studio.

While both Charlie and Luxmy Gopal did a small sway side-to-side as the song played, Charlie said: "Everybody knows that tune!"

Although his co-star wasted no time in letting people know that wasn't the case earlier on in the programme when he forgot how it went.

She replied: "Well, you say that but you asked me to hum it to you earlier because you couldn't remember it."

Looking straight into the camera with a blank expression, Charlie didn't look too thrilled he'd been exposed by Luxmy.

He quickly replied: "I know but as soon as you hear it, you're taken to the programme."

Agreeing, she continued: Absolutely, when you hear the phrase Match of the Day you're transported.

Luxmy sat alongside Charlie on Thursday while his usual co-star Naga Munchetty was absent from the programme.

Viewers were thrilled to see the BBC star front the show in the week as she often appears on the sofa during weekend episodes.

During the show, there was a humourous moment between Charlie and Luxmy as they spoke about a tree which was supposed to be in the shape of an elephant.

Although they were both unable to see the figure, Luxmy commented: "Well, it's got a trunk."

However, Charlie completely didn't catch on to the pun as he handed over to weather star Carol Kirkwood.

Asking if she was able to make out the elephant in the tree, she laughed and replied: "I liked Luxmy's joke about having a trunk!"

Thrilled, Luxmy replied: "At least you noticed it, Carol! Nobody else, absolute tumbleweed elsewhere, but thank you, Carol for acknowledging it."

Looking embarrassed, Charlie said: "I did miss it! Do you want to repeat it? is that more agony?"

Although they were all laughing, Luxmy told her co-star if you have to repeat a joke it doesn't have the same impact, resulting in them awkwardly moving on.

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
