Brenda Blethyn has hinted at a new project after wrapping up her final scenes in Vera, causing the beloved actress to miss an event she was scheduled to attend in the North East.

The BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated actress first took on the role of straight-talking detective DCI Stanhope in the ITV drama 13 years ago. Her character quickly became a fan favourite worldwide and is considered one of television's top detectives.

Therefore, it was met with much disappointment when it was announced that Vera would conclude next year with its 14th series.

Production for the show's final season began at the end of May, with Brenda and her co-stars filming in locations such as Blyth, Gateshead, Hartlepool, South Shields, and Ashington. Some of the last shoots saw the cast and crew descend on the small Northumberland village of Glanton.

While the air date for the 14th series of Vera is yet to be confirmed, it appears that Brenda is already immersed in a new venture.

She informed her followers on X that she couldn't attend an open day at the Washington Riding Centre for the Disabled, a North East charity she supports, reports Chronicle Live.

Expressing sorrow for missing a cherished community event due to work commitments, Brenda said on X: "What lovely weather today for the fete @The Washington Riding Centre for the Disabled. so disappointed my work has prevented me from attending.

"I was looking forward to a little ride around the paddock on Lucky. lots of fun to be had so get along there. I'll come to visit soon."

It is unclear what "work" Brenda was referring to, but the actress recently wrapped up filming for the final series of Vera.

Fans rushed to the comment section to share their thoughts on Brenda's post, with one writing: "Thank you, it really has been a lovely day, with dogs, horses and hobby horses too."

"Can't wait. We've just been to the rendezvous cafe at Whitley Bay. Lovely weather. Lisa x," another wrote.

"I’m reading this in your Vera voice," a third joked while someone else praised: "We all love your work, Brenda. From educating Rita through to Vera. XXX." (sic)

A fifth stated: "Watching Vera on tele now, hope you have a great day."

The new series of Vera is expected to air in 2025 on ITV.
