GMB's Kate Garraway shares emotional Derek Draper confession as she eyes third NTA win

Kate Garraway chats about NTA nomination on Good Morning Britain

Kate Garraway was overcome with emotion on Good Morning Britain, as she discussed her late husband Derek Draper.

During a segment about the hottest TV updates with co-host Sean Fletcher and showbiz expert Richard Arnold, it was announced that Garraway is in the running for another prestigious accolade at the upcoming National Television Awards.

Garraway's powerful documentary 'Derek's Story' has been shortlisted for the Best Authored Documentary NTA, where it faces stiff competition from Rose Ayling-Ellis's 'Signs for Change' and Rhod Gilbert's candid 'Stand Up To Cancer' special 'A Pain in the Neck'.

Also nominated are star-studded documentaries by Robbie Williams and David Beckham.

Upon learning of her nomination, Richard Arnold encouraged her with the words: "If you go home with that gong it'll be a hat-trick."

To which Kate responded, acknowledging the significance of a potential win: "It will be a hat-trick apparently you never win three. But I would love it to do well, I would love people to recognise it because it's Derek's story and also it was really all about carers. Unpaid and paid. I'd like them to get some focus, really," reports the Mirror.

Richard concurred, adding: "Amen to that."

The latest addition to her documentary works underscores the vital role of caregivers during the latter part of Derek's life, an issue that visibly moved Garraway during the discussion.

Prevailing at the NTAs in 2021 and 2022 with 'Finding Derek' and 'Caring for Derek', respectively, Garraway has already received considerable recognition for her work. Derek Draper, who had a prolonged battle with long Covid resulting in a coma, tragically passed away at just 56 years old.

Kate issued a heart-wrenching statement at the time of his passing, telling her followers: "I'm sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."

She continued: "Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed."

Moving on from the devastating news, it's worth noting that Kate's comrade from the GMB team, Martin Lewis, is also up for accolades at the NTA, earning nods for his Money Show, as well as a nomination in the Expert category.
