All Creatures Great and Small season 4 trailer

All Creatures Great and Small is coming back to Channel 5 soon as season five gears up to make its debut. The much-loved escapist drama has also recently become available on Netflix.

Inspired by the written works of Alf Wight, better known as James Herriot, the series touches on Alf's real-life experiences while working as a Yorkshire vet. In the Channel 5 adaptation, Nicholas Ralph plays keen vet, James Herriot.

He works under Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West), the eccentric owner of Skeldale House veterinary practice. Realising James' passion and potential, Siegfried offers James part-ownership of the practice.

The series was filmed in the Yorkshire Dales, often around Nidderdale, with the village of Grassington in Upper Wharfedale used for the fictional village of Darrowby.

A private residence in Grassington was used for the exterior of Skeldale House in the 2020 series.

The real Skeldale House which was used for filming the original series is managed by Maison Parfaite - owned and run by its founders, husband and wife team Sean and Sarah McDermott.

Rooms within the building in Askrigg can be rented out, with the website listing the location as "The Original Filming Location of All Creatures Great & Small".

The website says: "Skeldale House offers seven unique apartments that bring together mid-century styling and ornate detailing with upmarket, modern appliances for the ultimate in comfort and luxury.

"We’ve provided each apartment with comfortable beds, roll-top baths, and 58’’ 4K Ultra HD TVs to enjoy after a day out in beautiful Wensleydale. As with all Maison Parfaite properties, our attention to detail is second to none.

"For viewers of the TV classic, All Creatures Great and Small, much pleasure is derived from staying in the actual, original filming location.

"We’ve even installed a fully operational Austin 10 outside the front door!"

James's practice, which was actually based in Kirkgate, Thirsk, is now home to the World of James Herriot Museum.

The fully restored site of his original 1940s home and veterinary practice now features an interactive gallery and memorabilia room.

Production designer Jacqueline Smith spoke to Masterpiece about hunting down the perfect filming location, she said: "The nice thing was that there weren’t any modern houses in the town centre.

"So we didn’t have to change anything completely. What we did change were all the shop signs and the usual things like aerials, satellite dishes, alarm boxes and all of those things.”

All Creatures Great and Small returns to Channel 5 in the autumn, the first season is available to watch on Netflix.
