They say kids grow up fast but a new reality TV show has taken this to the next level.

The Secret World of Children sees two sets of youngsters let loose into the adult world, testing their ability to navigate social situations and problems.

In the first episode, being shown on Channel 5 tonight, Lily, Ossa, Maxwell, Ben, Alexis and Harrison are given tasks they must deal with.

They handle adult jobs like working on a market stall, shopping for clothes for a "fancy meal", and going to restaurants to eat unfamiliar food.

The show's narrator, This Morning host Craig Doyle, said: "As a father of four, I know how hilarious and nerve-racking it is to watch your children take their first steps towards independence.

"This shows us how kids really think and act when faced with new, grown-up challenges."

Craig, 53, added: "It is sweet and sometimes shocking and full of surprises. It will have you holding your breath in anticipation and laughing your head off in recognition."

And neuroscientist Professor Paul Howard-Jones added: "While it's important that as parents we protect our children, we also have a duty to prepare them to look after themselves."
