New BBC series with 'larger stakes' set to rival popular Bargain Hunt

Bargain Hunt: Guest says we are looking for a goat riding a unicorn

A new BBC show is set to rival the popular series, Bargain Hunt, according to reports. The fan-favourite show has captivated viewers for 24 years so it comes as no surprise that the BBC is keen to introduce a similar show.

Show insiders claimed that BBC bosses are working on a new format called The Art Game as producers want to continue to build on the success of the beloved antiques show.

The new series is expected to see contestants buy and sell pieces of art. “Bargain Hunt averages around two million viewers a day so it’s little surprise that twists on the format are always being considered by commissioners,” a source told The Sun.

“The latest is The Art Game, with a six-part series being made by BBC Arts. Each hour-long episode will follow ordinary people as they try to buy art they think will turn a profit.”

An insider added: “From Monet to Banksy, and everything in between, it has a more cultured edge to it than Bargain Hunt’s trawl for antiques but is just as exciting, if not more, as larger stakes are involved. The show should air next year.”

BBC One’s Bargain Hunt, which first aired in 2000, sees two teams split into blues and reds as they attempt to buy collectibles with a budget of £300 and they are given one hour to find their items.

The items are then sold at a real auction a week later to see which teams make the biggest profit. Each team is also accompanied by an antiques trade expert, who brings a bonus item however, it is the contestants' decision whether to heed the advice given by their expert.

If the final total shows a profit, the team receives the cash but if they make a loss then the team receives nothing. In the end, the team with the biggest profit is crowned the winner of the episode.

Bargain Hunt was originally presented by David Dickinson then from 2003 to January 2016 it was presented by Tim Wonnacott.

In 2016, the format changed to a number of different hosts from a "team of experts" fronting the series.

The Art Game has been made by Stellify Media, who are behind Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It is expected that contestants on the show will be given a similar budget to purchase their art pieces.
