Cricket legend Freddie Flintoff has revealed how his team on TV show Field of Dreams helped him through the aftermath of the horror Top Gear car crash that nearly killed him.

Field of Dreams sees Flintoff training a group of lads in his hometown of Preston, Lancashire, with the aim of taking them on a cricket tour to India. The tour had originally been planned for 2022 but was put on hold after Flintoff suffered life-threatening injuries while filming for Top Gear.

Flintoff told the TV Times: "Because of the crash it [the tour] happened a year later than it should have done.

"I think in some ways that was almost a blessing - not the accident, but the fact that the lads were a year older.

"There are a few things I've struggled with, which I was quite honest about and the lads helped me to get through."

Flintoff's appearance on Field of Dreams at 9pm tonight [Tuesday, August 13] marks his first return to the screen since the shocking car crash that almost claimed his life 20 months ago.

The former international cricketer, 46, has openly admitted he "shouldn't be here" after the horror incident at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey on December 13, 2022. Flintoff was driving a £43,000 Morgan Super 3 three-wheel car when it slipped and flipped along the track.

He then faced an 'agonising' 45 minute wait for the air ambulance to arrive and rush him to hospital, with the BBC later giving the presenter an apology. Flintoff was left with severe facial injuries and several broken ribs.

It also proved to be the beginning of the end for Top Gear, with the long-running BBC show subsequently axed and Freddie negotiating a £9million settlement with his former employers for two years' loss of earnings.

Flintoff told TV Times what challenges he faced by taking the group of lads from Preston to a foreign country.

He said: "You've taken a group of lads away who aren't your kids and you're responsible for taking care of them, and I was nervous about that.

"We had a few issues about lateness - which is a bit rich, coming from me! But they were an absolute dream most of the time."

Field of Dreams airs tonight [Tuesday, August 13] at 9pm on BBC One.
