Mastermind: Player Aaron introduces himself on show

Mastermind has officially returned to BBC and viewers were ecstatic after contestant Aaron Casanova was introduced. The media consultant had success with his specialist subject but eventually failed at the final hurdle.

On Monday (August 12), the 51st season of Mastermind premiered on BBC Two and host Clive Myrie, 59, welcomed four brand-new contestants into the studio. The quartet consisted of Claire Reynolds, whose specialist subject was Dad’s Army and Aaron, who answered questions on Liverpool FC under former manager Jürgen Klopp.

After introducing himself and his specialist subject, Clive remarked: “Liverpool’s era of success under their popular German manager. You’ve got two minutes, lets go.”

Aaron managed to earn himself a neat 11 points in the specialist round after only stumbling on two questions. However, he failed to impress in the general knowledge round and only added six points to his total.

Aaron eventually placed fourth in the classic quiz with a score of 17 points, behind Danny Lardner with 19, Claire with 23 and episode champion Nancy Braithwaite who collected 25 points. Nancy—who was answering questions on the life and works of Jane Austen—secured her a place in the Mastermind semi-finals while the three contenders were forced to return home.

However, it appears fans were enamoured by Aaron’s appearance on the show in particular and took to social media to have their say.

One user of X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “A contestant with the surname Casanova and Jane Austen as a specialist subject?! We are so back!”

Another typed: “Aaron Casanova is a cool name.”

“Casanova. What a fab surname,” remarked someone else.

A fourth viewer commented: “Aaron Casanova. That's a name to live up to (and so is Casanova).”

Earlier this year, Clive revealed that he believed Mastermind viewers were “fools” before claiming he had no compassion for the contestants on the BBC series.

The Lancashire-born star took over the show in 2021 after former host John Humphrys stepped down after 18 years and said that contenders should pass on questions quickly if they’re unsure of the correct answer.

"If you get it wrong, you must move on. If you go, 'Um... um...', that's three, four seconds gone,” he told Radio Times.

“People say, 'You asked that person 16 questions and the other 14.' Add up all the ums, you damn fool, and you'll see what's going on."

"I am a beast. But you know, all that adds to the pressure.”

You can tune into Mastermind every Monday evening from 7.30pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
