Olympic viewers 'switch off' as BBC fans divided over 'embarrassing' breakdancing debut

Olympics: Hudson-Smith vows to build on 400m silver

For the first time in Olympic history, breakdancing was shown on the Paris Summer Games by the International Olympic Committee, but people are still divided.

16 women and 15 men travelled to the French capital in hopes of becoming the first person to win Gold in the sport, however, the first match went viral for the wrong reasons.

On Friday, Australia’s Raygun found herself in a social media storm after her performance left fans questioning whether breakdancing should be an Olympic sport.

The 36-year-old went viral after awkwardly squirming across the dancefloor with a chaotic routine which ended without a single score from the judges.

As the contest continued with appearances from athletes hailing from the USA, Japan, Lituania and China, viewers revealed they were too “cringed” to continue watching.

An unimpressed @OwenReeman3 stated: “It’s been here less than a day and I already hate it Get Breakdancing out of the Olympics as soon as possible because wtf is this.” (sic)

Taking to X, @TheTweetingElf admitted: “I had to stop watching the break dancing. It was rubbish.”

@RC2DA echoed: “I literally watched about 20 seconds of Olympic break-dancing and I turned off the tele.”

A fourth viewer @oneit_rai added: “A biggest 2nd hand embarrassment Olympics Paris 2024 is watching breakdance.”

@pp_taylor remarked: “I've had to switch from break dancing on BBC1 to the red channel for Olympic boxing. Shouldn't that be the other way around?”

As @BigDaddyPadge slammed: “Break dancing should not be an Olympic sport. I have watched about 2 minutes and that's all I need to see to know how dumb it is.”

Although breakdancing’s addition was announced at the 2020 Tokyo Games, it has already been scrapped ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

It was cut from the program for flag football, cricket, squash, lacrosse, and baseball/softball which IOC President Thomas Bach believes “is in line with the American sports culture.”
