Netflix documentary to explore heartbreaking murder of pregnant Laci Peterson

Netflix Laci Peterson documentary trailer

One of America's most infamous true crime cases is set to be explored in a new Netflix documentary.

At eight months pregnant, Laci Peterson went missing from her home in Modesto, California, on Christmas Eve 2002. The disturbing case captured the nation's attention, dominating news media night after night.

That April, the decomposing body of Laci's unborn son was found by dog walkers in a marshy area of a San Francisco Bay shore park. A day later, Laci's body was found washed up on the rocky shoreline of the bay, a mile away from where the baby's body was found.

The corpse was decomposed to the point of being almost unrecognizable as a human body - and missing its head, arms and most of the legs. Law enforcement eventually prosecuted her husband, Scott Peterson, for her brutal murder - as well as the killing of their unborn son.

He was found guilty of both first and second degree murder, although he pleaded not guilty, and maintains his innocence to this day. Now, Laci's story will be told in the documentary American Murder: Laci Peterson.

The Girl in the Picture's Skye Borgman serves as director. The film will also feature an exclusive interview with Laci's mother, 20 years on from Scott's conviction. The three-part documentary series uses news clips, interrogation footage, and courtroom cameras to bring the dramatic disappearance, investigation, and trial into focus.

The documentary's official synopsis reads: "Alongside interviews with detectives, reporters, lawyers, and jurors recounting their experiences in real time, it also features a conversation with Amber Frey, the woman with whom Scott was living a double life at the time of Laci's disappearance - and whose willingness to participate with law enforcement led to major breakthroughs in the case."

It continues: "And for the very first time since Laci's heartbreaking death, her mother, Sharon Rocha, and a trio of her childhood friends speak candidly about their memories of Laci, the impact this shocking crime had on their lives, and their hopes that, in coming forward to tell Laci's story for a new generation, they might empower other women experiencing intimate partner violence to escape a similarly tragic fate."

Scott was initially sentenced to death, but this was overturned in 2020. The following year, he was re-sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

American Murder: Laci Peterson drops on Netflix on August 14.
