BBC Breakfast presenter swipes 'that not ok' to co-star as joke turns sour

BBC Breakfast in awkward tension as host says 'that not OK'

BBC Breakfast was caught up in a toe curling moment when a sports presenter floated a joke that didn't sit well.

On Wednesday's programme, Ben Thompson was fronting the show alongside Sarah Campbell, with the pair standing in for usual hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, who are currently enjoying a summer break away from the programme.

Viewers who have tuned in over the last week and beyond, will know that there's a fun-loving relationship had with host Ben and his co-star, sports presenter John Watson and lots of laughs and jibes often are bounced off between the pair.

Today's show was no exception either, however, John's joke just didn't sit well on this occasion. The BBC had been hailing olympics hero, 51-year-old Andy Macdonald, who is somewhat a skateboarding legend.

After the segment had finished, John explained people were now calling him "Old Macdonald" but this time, his co-star Ben was not impressed. With dismay all across his face, Ben retorted: "That is not ok."

Sarah didn't know what to say as she sniggered at the awkward jibe about the team GB skater. Luckily, from Olympian Andy's VT it seemed as though he wasn't one to shy away from a bit of banter.

Speaking on camera he said: "If there was a gold medal for whoever has the most fun on the course, I got that wrapped up." John then went on to explain to viewers: "Yeah, he's a bit of a skatingboarding legend 51-year-old Andy Macdonald, and at 51, can you guess what they are calling him?"

Following a short pause, he explained: "Old Macdonald."

This week, Ben and Sarah have been filling the post of usual hosts Naga, Charlie, Jon Kay and Sally Nugent but the programme hasn't exactly ran smoothly all week, with Ben being caught out on air.

During one episode Ben was caught chatting away with his colleague Sarah as the programme returned from a short break, much to his surprise that the camera's were rolling.

Getting back to business, he giggled before adding: "Hello. Welcome if you're joining us on BBC Two. This is Breakfast with Sarah Campbell and Ben Thompson and let's take you straight to Carol because she's got a look at the weather for us this morning."
