Presumed Innocent’s Peter Sarsgaard has confirmed he sadly won’t be returning for the Apple TV+ drama’s second season.

The hit thriller stars Hollywood A-lister Jake Gyllenhaal as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor at the top of his game until he’s accused of the murder of one of his colleagues.

Actor Peter portrayed deputy chief prosecutor Tommy Molto, the latest in standout performances that also include The Batman, Dopesick and The Lost Daughter.

Unfortunately, he won’t be returning for the legal thriller’s second season, which was renewed in July.

He explained the main reason he won’t be back is because he never signs up for follow-ups.

“I’m not really that interested in sequels,” he explained.

“I think I’ve only ever done one season of anything. I think I’m a one-season person.”

Apple TV+ has already confirmed the second season will follow a “brand new case”, so there’s a strong chance Jake and the rest of the main cast won’t be returning either.

Also included in the all-star cast were Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle and Renate Reinsve, who likely won’t be back in season two.

However, any chance Peter’s character Tommy and the rest of the prosecuting team would be back for another trial seems to have been ruled out.

Speaking to IndieWire, he added: “I tell my kids this sometimes, maybe I’ve done 90, 100 different things over the years between movies, TV shows, and plays.

“I say, ‘I’m very good at saying hello and saying goodbye.’

“There’s a very valuable thing in saying goodbye because then you have to look for another source of inspiration and then you change.”

Fans of the series may be disappointed if the main cast don’t return but, with Oscar-nominee Jake leading the first instalment there’s no doubt Apple’s follow-up will score some top talent.

Jake is also expected to return behind the scenes as executive producer alongside David E Kelley, JJ Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich, Dustin Thomason and Matt Tinker.

Presumed Innocent is available to stream on Apple TV+.
