Escape to the Country: Alistair says couple look unimpressed with tree

Escape to the Country's Alistair Appleton has graced our screens for nearly two decades and has become a popular face on BBC shows. His charismatic presenting style and rapport with house hunters on the BBC property show have made him a beloved figure alongside co-hosts Ginny Buckley and Nicki Chapman.

Born in Hampshire, the 54-year-old Cambridge graduate travelled abroad post-university where he taught English at the University of Gdansk in Poland before launching a broadcasting career in Germany with Deutsche Welle as a translator and journalist.

Alistair's early TV career spanned Hot TV on Sky, Channel Five's House Doctor, Rhona on BBC, Cash in the Attic in the early 2000s before he transitioned to Escape to the Country in 2007.

While Alistair leads a very private life, he occasionally offers a peek into his downtime. Here's what we know about his artistic husband and their idyllic cottage home.

Alistair first came out as gay during his university years and confesses he only fully embraced his sexuality while living in Poland and Germany.

Alistair has largely kept his personal life under wraps, but he has sporadically discussed his husband on social media and in interviews. Alistair is currently wedded to his husband Daniel Martin, and the couple reside in a 1930s French sea captain's cottage in the port of Newhaven.

The couple reside in an idyllic Sussex cottage, complete with their lovable dog Ben and a spirited two-year-old cat named Joni. In June, the pair turned heads when Daniel's pottery talent was highlighted on social media: "So proud of my beautiful husband The Pilgrim Potter. This weekend is his first pottery fair."

"At the prestigious Towner Gallery no less. this weekend! After a mad rush with lots of explosions and triumphs - he's here!! And it looks stunning."

Daniel's creations from The Pilgrim Potter Instagram page grace various venues and sculpture gardens.

When the country was under a Covid-19 enforced lockdown, they launched free fitness sessions on Mind Springs blog. Alistair shared: "My husband Daniel, a yoga teacher, and I are offering free meditation and yoga to keep us grounded and happy during these extraordinary times. All welcome."

Alistair also shared heartfelt appreciation for his partner commenting: "I am lucky to have found love and have a very understanding and supportive husband, Daniel... We're currently in a 1930s French sea captain's cottage in the port of Newhaven. And we live there with our very big dog Ben."
