BBC Breakfast hosts issues warning to viewers over 'upsetting' content after backlash

BBC Breakfast: Ben warns viewers of upsetting details in report

The BBC Breakfast were forthcoming with issuing appropriate warnings to fans after backlash.

Ben Thompson and Sarah Campbell were in the hosting chair on Tuesday (August 6) and were about to delve into a segment about a British man who had been kept as a slave for over 25 years. It was one of the biggest cases of modern day slavery and his family have since sued the government and won a record payout.

The unnamed man was held on a travellers site by the Rooney family, with 17 other vulnerable men. He was forced to work for little or no pay, fed on scraps and would be beaten if he didn't comply.

Years later the victim's sister has continued to fight for justice and now feels like she has finally won her brother an adequate sum of compensation for his years of torment and suffering.

Speaking on the programme but choosing to keep her identity out of the public domain after still being fearful of The Rooney's, the victims sister said: "I only wish the money could fix him but it won't."

With the content being of "upsetting" nature, Ben and Sarah didn't want to take any chances with not issuing warnings to fans watching at home - this after the channel faced criticism for not issuing appropriate warnings over graphic surgery scenes at the weekend.

The BBC were undated with complaints after they aired a scene showcasing botched plastic surgery that left viewers retching.

In the much-complained about snippet, Pinky Jolley had been unable to eat for years following an operation to help with weight loss. Her story was heartbreaking as she was left in a very nearly-fatal condition and was totally reliant on a feeding tube after botched surgery

She had been left in a serious condition after shelling out £2,000 for surgery in Turkey which caused her internal organs to fuse together. Undergoing corrective surgery, to improve the quality of her life, a surgeon was shown to be operating on her at 7:30am on Sunday morning.

Early morning risers were disgusted at the graphic scene and complained that the segment had not issued a prior warning over distressing content while they ate their breakfast.

Taking to Twitter - once known as X - disgruntled fans complained: "Graphic surgery scenes this early in a morning... yum." Another echoed: "Surgery and dog s**t lovely Sunday topics this morning."
