Suspect series two is set to grip audiences once again with its return on Wednesday, July 24, featuring episodes five and six. The psychological thriller made a dramatic return earlier this month, with Anne-Marie Duff taking the lead as Dr Susannah Newman.

The second season picks up from the acclaimed first series that graced Channel 4 screens in 2022, with James Nesbitt portraying Detective Danny Frater. Retaining the unique structure of its predecessor, the new series continues to focus each episode on an intense interaction between just two characters.

Anne-Marie has lauded the show's distinctive approach, stating: "One of the lovely things about this show is that it has a very specific conceit. Most of the episodes are two-handers and that was set up in the first series and continued in the second series. It is a fantastic thing to see two actors really just playing with each other for a solid half an hour. For an actor, it's blissful and rare on a TV or film set."

The upcoming fifth episode, titled Sapphire, unfolds in a posh London hotel where Dr Newman meets with sex worker Sapphire, a key witness in a murder investigation, as she delves deeper into the mystery surrounding her daughter's death.

In the sixth episode, Joseph, Dr Newman reconnects with a former client and Royal Marine, Joseph. Together, they navigate the Thames in search of Sapphire, after she ran away, reports Wales Online.

Celine Buckens stars as Sapphire

Actress Celine Buckens portrays Sapphire in the series. Opening up about her character's complexities, she revealed: "Sapphire is a high-class escort and is quite savvy because she's had to be in her line of work, she knows how to defend herself. Her real name is Emma."

She delved into the research for the role, stating, "I did a bit of research with some sex workers in London because the laws are so different in different countries that massively impacts on the experiences. So the ECP (English Collective of Prostitutes) were really helpful and connected me with a few people who I could ask some questions to and discuss the different kind of scenarios you might be in."

Fans will remember Celine from Showtrial where she embodied Talitha Campbell, as well as The Ex-Wife, featuring her as Tasha. Additionally, Buckens has shown her acting prowess in War Horse, Free Reign, Warrior, Bridgerton portraying Kitty Langham, and recently made waves in The Castaways.

Discussing his character, Nicholas shared: "He's ex-military, and he went to Susannah for some therapy, some PTSD therapy. And he ended up falling in love with her. It wasn't reciprocated. And she had told him they can't see each other for a very long time. I think there's like a 2-year period before a therapist and their client can see each other outside of the therapy room."

"Then she turns up and she's seeking his help, and that really throws him off, because he still has these feelings that he felt were unrequited, and he felt quite abandoned by her. And so it's a very tense and fraught reunion between the two. But she's in need of his help. And, you know, not only does he love her, but it's his duty as an ex-Marine, and he wants to help out this friend who's lost her daughter. And they go on this adventure together to find the bad guy."

Nicholas has previously graced our screens in Top Boy, For Life, Fortitude, where he plays Frank Sutter, and Django. Fans may also recognise Nicholas from Captain America: The First Avenger, and more recently This Town.
