Labour sparks outrage as Sky News presenters hit out at 'disrespectful snub'

Sky News presenters on Yvette Cooper not turning up

The Labour party has sparked outrage as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper snubbed an appearance on Sky News. The 55-year-old was due to speak to Kay Burley and Gareth Barlow on their breakfast show, but decided not to show up.

Addressing Cooper's absence, Burley explained: "Normally we would have had an interview with a government minister by now. And in fact the team were helping me prep for Yvette Cooper, MP for Pontefract."

Darren McCaffrey quipped: "Yeah, indeed. We're trying to get to the reason why Yvette Cooper isn't here." The presenter simply responded: "I think I can guess."

McCaffrey mentioned Keir Starmer's "ruthless" decision to sack seven of his own MPs for rebelling against him in a key King’s Speech vote over child benefits.

"The Prime Minister has clearly made a punchy decision last night about rebellions. Seven Labour MPs, or no longer for the next six months, who decided to rebel against the first Labour King's Speech in 14 years," he said.

The political correspondent added: "But Yvette Cooper's been around the block a few times, she knows politics pretty well. I think the Labour party would say this is a good thing that they are imposing discipline and they're setting an intention for how government is going to be run for the next five years."

Burley declared: "But they should be held to account by the people that have elected them and we're privileged to be able to do that on our viewers' behalf."

As McCaffrey pointed out there was still time for Cooper to show up, Barlow asserted the same questions would be asked during Thursday's show. "And if they come tomorrow, the questions will still be asked. So it's not like they're avoiding the scrutiny, we will still get to it," he insisted.

"So if you're going to be ruthless, come and defend being ruthless," the presenter concluded. Meanwhile Wilfred Frost branded Cooper's absence "rather disrespectful".

"I think it seems, given the news flow and they've given you no explanation, that that is exactly what's happening, running for the hills," he claimed. "I don't think that sounds out a particularly strong message."

He continued: "It leaves you hanging so it's rather disrespectful on top of that. Three weeks into the new government, if you're sending a message loud and clear to your own MPs by suspending the whip, you've got to back that up the following day."

Apsana Begum, Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, Imran Hussain, Rebecca Long-Bailey, John McDonnell and Zarah Sultana will now all sit as independent MPs, alongside former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
