Channel 4 announces return of much loved series 10 years after it first aired

Ed Balls tears up at Educating Yorkshire child with stutter

Channel 4 has confirmed the comeback of its beloved TV series, Educating Yorkshire, a decade after its initial broadcast. The Bafta and Emmy award-winning documentary series first graced our screens in 2013, capturing the hearts of the nation.

The show, which followed the lives of students and staff at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, drew millions of viewers each week. Although the franchise concluded in 2020, it's set to make a triumphant return with a fresh series slated for release next year.

The upcoming series promises to build on the legacy of Educating Yorkshire while introducing a complete reinvention of the brand. With a decade of change behind us, the series will explore new narratives ranging from exam stress and friendship dilemmas to national crises and the influence of mobile phones and social media.

Viewers can expect to see some familiar faces, including fan favourite Mr Burton, who previously helped student Musharaf overcome his stutter, reports the Mirror.

Since we last saw him, Mr Burton has ascended to the role of head at Thornhill, succeeding Mr Mitchell. He expressed his excitement about welcoming Channel 4 back to the academy, stating that he had been waiting for the right time.

He believes there is no better moment to highlight the challenges his staff and students continue to face.

Mr Burton expressed his enthusiasm: "I'm excited to welcome Twofour back into our school over the coming months. The national challenges the profession faces are well publicised, and at Thornhill, I'm really proud of how our staff and students work together to thrive through those. Our values - 'work hard and be nice' - are at the centre of all we do; I have no doubt that viewers will see those come to life in our brilliant community."

The original masterminds behind the series, Grace Reynolds and David Clews, are once again at the helm for the upcoming season, with David Brindley joining the leadership team.

Channel 4's commissioning editor Rita Daniels commented: "Telling the complex story of young people in Britain in 2025 is crucial for Channel 4, and what better way to do so than through this iconic, much-loved school. It will be fantastic to see Mr Burton in charge, and I look forward to watching him seize the reigns with full gusto."

She added, "Much has changed for British teenagers since we were last at Thornhill Academy, and it will be fascinating to see how practices have developed and adapted since the burgeoning impact of social media, the covid epidemic and the intense pressure to deliver good results."

David Clews, the Chief Creative Director at Twofour, expressed his excitement about returning to a familiar setting for the Educating series. He said: "Making the Educating series was a highlight of my career and I couldn't be happier to be going back to a school we know and love to make something brand new and reflective of the world we live in today. Schools and young people deserve an honest and joyful portrayal on our screens and we can't wait to work with a brilliant team to create that."
