House of the Dragon season 2: Who is Ulf White and what does it mean to be a Dragonseed

House of the Dragon Season 2 official trailer

*Warning - The following article contains spoilers from House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 and George R.R. Martin’s wider Game of Thrones literary universe*

House of the Dragon appears to be gearing up for a major plotline from Game of Thrones history, leaving book-lovers excited and the rest of us rather puzzled. The third episode of season 2 introduced the mysterious character of “Ulf”, who described himself as a “Dragonseed”.

But what does that mean for Sky and HBO viewers who haven’t read George R.R. Martin’s novels? Express.co.uk takes a deep dive into the characters of Ulf White and his fellow “Dragonseeds”.

During episode 3, fans were treated to a rather lighthearted interlude from all the plotting and scheming of the Greens and Blacks. Ahead of King Aegon’s visit to a King’s Landing pub, we see a mysterious man who tells his pals drinking around him that he is of royal blood.

The man claims King Jaehaerys was his grandfather and that the information could “cost me my head”. Then he says: “I am the son of Baelon the Brave, bastard brother to Prince Daemon and the late King Viserys, uncle to the one true queen Rhaenera Targaryen.

“The blood of the dragon runs through these veins and, yes, men would take my head for it. “A dragon seed must watch his own neck when he has no white cloak guardsman to do it for him,” he added. Very intriguing indeed.

The man we can identify as Ulf (played by Tom Bennett) is interrupted by the king’s arrival before he can offer any proof of his supposed heritage.

While he could be just another King’s Landing drunkard telling tall tales at the tavern, he could also be the real deal.

In fact, Ulf isn’t the only seemingly unimportant character crop up in House of the Dragon this season.

Before his arrival, fans may also remember being introduced to Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew), Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim), and Alyn’s brother Addam (Clinton Liberty).

Why are these seemingly pointless characters making their debut in season 2? Keep reading for the answers but, be warned, there are major spoilers ahead.

The man known as Ulf the White - or just plain old Ulf White - is a Dragonseed according to book lore.

We don’t know if he is actually the bastard son of Baelon Targaryen, but in the books it is later revealed he is able to ride a dragon, suggesting he is of royal ancestry.

George R.R. Martin’s prequel text Fire & Blood describes Ulf as an illiterate drunk who ends up being able to claim the dragon Silverwing after Jacaerys Velaryon puts out the call for Dragonseeds during the civil war.

What Is a Dragonseed?

Dragonseen is a known term in Westeros referring to bastards of Valyrian descent. This means that they have the “blood of the dragon” within them.

It is politically dangerous for the Dragonseeds to reveal themselves, as bastards can be a threat to the stability of the royal houses.

However, one major positive for the Dragonseeds is that, as their name suggests, they are able to ride dragons.

When Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) realises she needs reinforcements as House Hightower plans its attack, she may call on the Dragonseeds scattered throughout Westeros to help her cause.

Other potential Dragonseeds include Alyn and Addam, who are believed to be the bastard sons of Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint).

Alyn and Addam, who are legitimized as Velaryons in the books, seem set to play major roles in the Dance of the Dragons.

Another character, Hugh, also looks set to be a potential dragon rider for team black, but we’ll have to wait and see how the show turns out.

House of the Dragon season 2 lands in the UK on Mondays at 2am BST (British Summer Time) on Sky Atlantic and NOW, with a repeat airing later on at 9pm.
