Emmerdale exit 'sealed' and villager sent to prison after Rhona Goskirk betrayal

Emmerdale: Rhona ends up betraying her ex-husband in court (Image: (Image: ITV))

Emmerdale viewers saw an exit from the soap on Wednesday night after Rhona Goskirk (played by Zoe Henry) took a U-turn in court leaving Gus (Alan McKenna) in shock. Rhona, who promised her ex-husband that she would support his court case, decided to turn against Gus in a bid to gain full custody of their daughter, Ivy.

Gus had previously attempted to smear Rhona's name in court, but his plan backfired when the jury found Rhona innocent of all charges. He later went grovelling to the vet in the hopes she would help him get a lesser sentence for his crime of stealing Rhona's embryos without her knowledge.

However, as she began to read her statement in defence of Gus, Rhona halted and told the court: "I can't do this." She proceeded to break down in tears as she reeled off the reasons she couldn't support him.

"Here is where I do get to take control by telling the truth," Rhona sobbed. "He nearly destroyed me, nearly destroyed my family and that is just not me.

"That is my mum and my husband and my two other children and what I hope happens to him... sorry no that is not for me to say. I just need you to understand what he did to me, to us and I don't think we will ever get over it."

When it came to the sentencing, the judge gave Gus eight years in prison and he looked devastated by the verdict.

However, despite it being a positive outcome for Rhona, her betrayal has also caused a huge wedge between her and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock).

"Was it real all of that in the courtroom?" Marlon asked as Rhona explained: "Of course it was real. I was speaking from the heart, I know it was out of the blue."

Marlon fumed: "Too right it was out of the blue. I had no idea and I am just thinking when you decided this was going to happen?"

He later added: "You telling the truth isn't the problem, it is you not sharing it with me in the first place because that kind of thing is becoming a habit."

"He got what he deserved," Rhona added after Marlon pointed out he was being sent to prison for eight years.

"And there we have it right there... got what he deserved," the chef pointed out.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk about Gus and Rhona's storyline, actor Alan discussed his fate and Rhona turning against him.

"I think it's a lot of it is fear of what could happen to both of them and fear of his situation," the soap star stated. "Potentially Ivy going into care if it gets worse for him and so he ends up offering everything that they were asking for before which is for him to be around and to share custody.

"So he says, 'I will take the house off the market, I'll cancel the sale, I'll stay here and we can find a way'. He doesn't have the exact solution yet and he believes that the offer is enough to hopefully get Rhona on board and change her mind on the guilty not guilty plea.

"So yeah, I think he feels he's putting everything on the line."

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
