100 Princes Street hotel opens in Edinburgh

Edinburgh has welcomed a new boutique hotel in its city centre, with 100 Princes Street opening its doors to guests.

100 Princes Street marks the first Scottish property from family-owned hotel collection, Red Carnation Hotels. The boutique hotel occupies the building which formerly housed the headquarters of the Royal Overseas League, located close to Scotland’s National Gallery and facing Edinburgh Castle.

The hotel has been designed by the teams behind Botswana’s Xigera Safari Lodge and Ireland’s Ashford Castle – both of which are Red Carnation Hotels.

The team has preserved the architectural heritage of the building, with handpicked antiques and nautical design elements nodding to its history, while also introducing contemporary elements.

On display are artworks including bespoke pieces by decorative arts specialists, Croxford and Saunders. Among these is a hand-painted vintage-style mural stretching the length of the five-storey staircase, which depicts the plants, trees and flowers discovered by Scottish botanists on their travels – with each vignette representing a different location.

The hotel offers 30 rooms and suites, all of which feature custom-made furnishings, fabrics and artworks, including five tartans by Scottish designer Araminta Campbell. The two signature suites, which offer views of Edinburgh Castle, have been named after Scottish explorers Archibald Menzies and Isobel Wylie Hutchinson.

F&B areas include The Wallace dining room, bar and lounge, which offers healthy fare prepared using local Scottish produce, and the adjoining 12-seater private dining room Ghillie’s Pantry, which serves over 100 whiskies and custom tasting menus.

100 Princes Street will also offer tailored experiences for its guests, ranging from a personalised Scottish gin to fishing excursions on the River Tweed.

Rates at the hotel start from £450 for an entry-level double room, including breakfast for two.

The hotel is the group’s 17th property, joining existing hotels including Ashford Castle in Ireland and the Milestone Hotel & Residences in London Kensington.

Edinburgh has seen a flurry of new hotels in recent years – from Virgin Hotels Edinburgh (see our review) to the W Edinburgh (which we are set to visit later this month) and glamorous Gleneagles Townhouse. Still to come are properties from Ennismore and the Dalata Hotel Group.
