The Hoxton, Vienna opens its doors

Ennismore’s growing Hoxton brand has debuted in Austria with the unveiling of a property in Vienna.

The 196-room hotel is located in Vienna’s 3rd district within a marble-clad 1950s modernist building, designed by Carl Appel and formerly housing the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

The property features the Hoxton’s largest event space, known as the Auditorium, as well as a guests-only rooftop pool, Cuban-inspired rooftop bar Cayo Coco, French-meets-NYC all-day bistro Bouvier, and speakeasy-style cocktail bar Salon Paradise.

As with many of the brand’s properties, the interiors have been designed by AIME Studios, with this particular hotel drawing inspiration from Appel’s mid-century aesthetic and the Wiener Werkstätte movement. Many of the building’s original features have been preserved, including the original travertine-clad walls and terrazzo flooring in the double-height lobby, though the Hoxton has introduced greenery, locally sourced vintage furniture and artwork curated by Sterling Art.

Rooms come in Hoxton’s categories of Shoebox, Snug, Cosy and Roomy, and feature early 20th century Austrian design – including geometric patterned curtains influenced by Wiener Werkstätte fabrics, ruched headboards inspired by architect Adolf Loos, local photography, and the brand’s signature amenities such as a Roberts radio and Blank toiletries.

All day restaurant Bouvier features a menu curated in partnership with Jeremiah Stone and Fabián von Hauske Valtierra, with dishes including chicken caesar schnitzel, moules-frites with tomato white wine sauce, and a hash brown topped with smoked salmon, herb cream cheese and dill (which Business Traveller enjoyed recently at a press dinner).

The restaurant is located off to the right of the lobby and features a checkerboard terrazzo floor, deep red wall panelling, 1950s-inspired custom seating, an open kitchen and retro advertising posters. A 70-cover terrace with parasols is also located at the front of the property, or there’s the Sandwich Shop for grab-and-go items.

Each of the F&B venues adds an optional €1 donation to every bill, with 100 per cent of the money raised donated to The Gruft – a support facility for Vienna’s homeless.

On the events side, the 143 sqm Auditorium has its own dedicated street entrance and two fully-stocked bars. The space is designed with tiered cinema-style balcony seating, striped walls, electric blue drapes, vintage chandeliers and heavy velvet drapery. Additionally, the hotel will be holding its own events in the space, including a market for local artisans and a stand-up comedy night.

The brand’s hybrid events space, known as The Apartment, is also present at this new property. Located to the right of the front desk, its three private rooms (ranging from 32-54 sqm) are set around an open pantry with a kitchen that can become a bar in the evening. These can be hired individually or collectively and offer AV equipment and bold design.

The property is also home to The Hox Gallery, which showcases local emerging talent, and a shop selling products created for the hotel by independent artisans.

Rates at the property start from €119, though readers should note that members of Dis-Loyalty, Ennismore’s paid-for membership programme, get 50 per cent off newly opened hotels. Guests can therefore get half-price rates at the Vienna property until 30 June, 2024.

The Hoxton brand is part of Ennismore, in which Accor holds a majority stake, and launched in London’s Shoreditch in 2006. It currently has 16 properties open across Europe and North America, with recent openings including its second hotel in Amsterdam and The Hoxton, Brussels which we reviewed last year:
