American Taylor Fritz took down No. 4 Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the US Open quarterfinals Tuesday to reach his first major semifinal.

It was the the 12th-seeded Fritz's fourth win over an ATP top-10 player in a major this season, the most by an American man in one year since Andre Agassi won five in 1999. Before this season, Fritz was 0-11 in majors against the ATP top 10.

With the win over Zverev -- which was a rematch of their fourth-round meeting at Wimbledon -- Fritz joins Frances Tiafoe (2022 US Open), Tommy Paul (2023 Australian Open) and Ben Shelton (2023 US Open) as the only active American men with major semifinal appearances.

Tiafoe will be seeking his second major semifinal appearance when he takes on No. 9 seed Grigor Dimitrov in the evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. A win by Tiafoe would guarantee the first American men's major finalist since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009, when he lost an epic match against Roger Federer 16-14 in the fifth set.

Fritz's 16 major match wins are the most by an American man in a year since Roddick (16 in 2009), also the last American man to win a Grand Slam (2003 US Open).
