Rory McIlroy joining forces with Scottie Scheffler to take on two LIV Golf stars in an exhibition match has to be a rocket up the backside of PGA Tour officials.

They have been dragging out talks with Saudi's Public Investment Fund over repairing men's golf for way too long, with little sign of any progress.

Players are now taking it into their own hands to get "all golf fans excited", as McIlroy put it.

The longer PGA Tour and LIV Golf honchos leave it, the more of these matches will pop up.

Both parties met in New York this week to try and find a resolution, but judging from previous meetings, there will be nothing to write home about.

McIlroy insisted his and Scheffler's match against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka wasn't intended to "send a message".

But if the event is a success, it could be a nuclear warning for all tournaments outside of the four Majors.

Newey's biggest challenge yet

IF Adrian Newey can make Fernando Alonso or Lance Stroll a world champion it will be his greatest achievement in F1.

Aston Martin announced their new chief car designer this week and his first real impact will be on the 2026 vehicle.

Alonso will be 45 years old by then and Stroll has never shown title credentials. Newey has a monumental challenge ahead of him.

Davis Cup

IT's a sad sight to see so many empty seats at Manchester's AO Arena for the Davis Cup this week.

The 'World Cup of tennis' used to be an electric atmosphere more akin to a football match with home and away legs.

Having all group games at one venue kills the neutral ties. Barely anybody showed up to watch Canada vs Argentina.
