Tottenham Hotspur's first-choice goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, is facing a layoff after breaking his ankle during the 4-0 thumping of Manchester City. Despite the injury, which occurred in a collision in the first half, the resilient Italy international played on to finish the match at the Etihad Stadium.

Spurs have since announced that Vicario, aged 28, underwent surgery on Monday, releasing a statement: "We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has today undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle. Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training. We're all behind you, Vic."

In Vicario's absence, the gloves are handed over to experienced backup Fraser Forster, who has featured for Tottenham this season in the Carabao Cup and Europa League. Forster, aged 36, last featured in a Premier League game with a 4-1 victory at Leeds on the closing day of the previous season and earned his final England cap six years back in 2016.

New signing from Empoli, Vicario has been impressive for Spurs since his summer move, marking his 50th appearance for the London outfit in their recent win against Manchester City. Following the emphatic victory, which brushed off an unexpected loss to Ipswich, Vicario showcased an upbeat demeanor that underlined his importance to the team.

Following the final whistle and his jubilant celebration with the travelling supporters, Vicario took to Instagram to share a message: "A lot of noise recently but this is why we do it. Great win away from home."
