England’s new manager Thomas Tuchel will not attend next month’s World Cup qualifying draw as it falls before his official start date of January 1. The German will also have no say on the final Three Lions squad of the year as interim boss Lee Carsley prepares his team for next week’s Nations League clashes with Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
Tuchel was chosen as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor after the former defender resigned following England’s failure to land the Euro 2024 title.
Carsley was overlooked for the role, despite impressing during his stint as interim boss.
The FA are hoping that Tuchel can bring a winning mentality to the England squad after leading Chelsea to Champions League glory four months after becoming Blues boss in 2021.
The 51-year-old has bags of experience at the top of the game and won two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain after guiding Borussia Dortmund to German Cup success in 2017. He also oversaw Chelsea at the 2022 Club World Cup as they clinched silverware in Abu Dhabi.
According to the Daily Mail, Tuchel will not travel to Zurich for the World Cup qualifying draw as all parties stick steadfastly to his start date. And he will not influence Carsley’s Nations League selection, with the squad set to be announced on Thursday.
England reached the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after winning eight of their 10 qualifying matches and drawing the other two.
Their group included Poland, Albania, Hungary, Andorra and San Marino, with the Three Lions scoring 39 goals and conceding just three times on their way to topping the Group I table.
But they were eventually dumped out of the tournament at the quarter-finals stage after losing 2-1 to France. And Tuchel will be hoping to get a kind qualifying draw ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

Carsley has overseen three victories from his four games at the England helm, but saw his side come unstuck against Greece at Wembley last month as they lost 2-1.
The 50-year-old could be without a whole host of players for the trip to Greece next Thursday, with doubts remaining over the fitness of John Stones, Eberechi Eze, Kobbie Mainoo and Jack Grealish.
Carsley’s final match as England boss will come next Sunday against Ireland at Wembley, before he steps away to continue his role as England under-21s manager when Tuchel takes over.
