Manchester United are better than every other Premier League club at something which has pushed Erik ten Hag to the brink.

Further questions have been raised about the Dutchman's managerial future after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham on Sunday which left the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League table. Nine matches into the campaign, United have now lost more games than they have won.

And a set of alternative rankings shows that Ten Hag's side are being crippled by their inability to finish off high-quality opportunities. Taking into account only 'big chances missed', United top the pile. No team has spurned more than their 22 this season.

Tottenham have wasted the same amount, with Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea and Liverpool following closely behind. Teams need to create big chances in order to miss them, which is why it is no particular surprise to see a handful of high-flying sides near the top of the list.

But the difference between United and the chasing pack is that the five other teams named have all scored at least 17 league goals this term. In other words, they are missing big chances but also putting plenty away.

United, meanwhile, have found the net just eight times. Alejandro Garnacho is the only player to have scored more than once in the Premier League, with £72million Rasmus Hojlund and £36.5m Joshua Zirkzee both floundering at the business end of the pitch.

Marcus Rashford has not covered himself in glory either, while Bruno Fernandes - normally so influential in United's attack - is yet to get off the mark. The massive money spent on the likes of Mason Mount and Antony is also reflecting poorly on the club as neither player has netted in the nine Premier League games so far.

Ten Hag is under massive pressure to turn things around. He will hope to restore morale at home to Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, but United fans could be fearing the worst ahead of an Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea at the weekend.

Ten Hag addressed his team's wastefulness at the London Stadium before leaving empty-handed. "We know we had to score," he said. "We created so many chances. At half-time we should have been two or three-nil up, and then after half-time we forced it a bit.

"I can do nothing with the frustration, we don't collect points. We have to look in the mirror after not scoring from a really good game on our side, creating loads of chances and conceding no chances. When you lose in this way, it's a bad feeling."
