Brighton forward Danny Welbeck required oxygen after sustaining a concerning back injury during his side's victory over Newcastle United.

The former Manchester United and Arsenal striker had given his team the lead at St James' Park, but his match was cut short when he was stretchered off the field. Welbeck's injury occurred after a collision with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar, which initially seemed minor but ultimately forced him to exit the game.

As the 33-year-old was carried off on a stretcher, he was seen chatting with his teammates. Despite losing their goal-scorer, Brighton managed to hold on for a win, finishing the day just outside of the top four.

Welbeck's goal earlier in the match marked his fifth of the season, making him Brighton's top scorer this term. The 1-0 victory propelled Fabian Hurzeler's team to 15 points from eight games, securing fifth place after Saturday's matches.

However, Chelsea, the only team to have beaten Brighton this season, can reclaim that league position if they avoid defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

Hurzeler has heaped the praise on Welbeck on several occasions so far this season, recently commenting: "I don't see that he is getting old. He's a role model on and off the pitch - a gentleman with a lot of experience who is taking care of his team-mates, taking care of the culture and environment of the whole club. He is helpful in every phase. And on top of that, he is in great shape. Of course there are lots of things where he can improve but I'm very happy with how he's doing so far.

"What surprised me was how much Danny Welbeck takes care of his team-mates and how he protects them, how he helps them, how he supports them. I think that's not normal and something we should appreciate within this club.

"Having a player who is not only taking care of his own ego, because in the end in football there are a lot of egos but it's not just about scoring and making assists. He's taking care of the whole environment of his teammates and not just himself and that is for me something very surprising."
