Dutch legend Marco van Basten has delivered a scathing verdict on Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte after their recent defeat to Spurs.

Having signed from PSG in the summer, Ugarte was expected to beef up United's midfield but seemed utterly outclassed as Tottenham tore through Old Trafford's defence.

Signed with high hopes, Ugarte's displays have already become a talking point.

Van Basten didn't pull any punches, slamming United's transfer strategy under Erik ten Hag. The manager has had a mixed track record with new signings since he took the reins at Manchester.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Van Basten didn't mince his words: "I saw a new player walking around at Manchester United, (Manuel) Ugarte, for €50million (£42.3m). How is this guy walking around there? It's idiotic how much (Ten Hag) has decided to invest in players who are not even good."

Ugarte had also caught Chelsea's eye, and his impressive stats regarding tackles made from midfield have yet to translate into form at Old Trafford.

Former top-tier footballer Robbie Earle expressed empathy for the Uruguayan, suggesting he has joined a team that lacks a clear identity. Speaking on NBC, he said: "It's hard to sometime see what they are trying to do. I felt a little sorry for Ugarte, he's come to Manchester United as big midfield player, he's going to play with Kobbie Mainoo, and then around him there's all kind of chaos."

However, Van Basten continued his verbal attack on United, who have mustered just seven points from their opening six games of the season.

He went on to say: "Name me one top player at Manchester United? At every club you see a top player. (Marcus) Rashford is very bad. Bruno Fernandes is a good player, (Andre) Onana is a good goalkeeper. That's it. Casemiro is done. (Alejandro) Garnacho is a decent player. But nobody carries that team."
