Manchester United bosses are reportedly set to hold talks with free agent Adrien Rabiot and his entourage about a potential contract, with the Frenchman able to sign and play for the Red Devils despite the transfer window deadline passing.

The 29-year-old has been a long-standing United target and after leaving Juventus in June is on the search for a new club. He has already turned down offers from the Saudi Pro League and Galatasaray, possibly with an eye on staying in the elite European divisions.

The Daily Star claim that United chiefs will hold talks with Rabiot as Erik ten Hag hopes to strengthen his midfield, despite the summer deadline closing. Free agents can be signed before the January window opens and Rabiot could yet play a part in the first half of United’s campaign.

And having watched United’s midfield get bypassed with relative ease by their Liverpool counterparts en route to a 3-0 away win at Old Trafford, Ten Hag and INEOS have agreed that more help is required.

Scott McTominay, who scored again in Scotland’s Nations League defeat to Portugal on Sunday, was sold to help facilitate the arrival of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. However, Ten Hag has already admitted that the defensive midfielder could be “months” away from full fitness.

That is despite Ugarte starting for Uruguay during the international break.

Casemiro was hooked for Toby Collyer at half-time of the Liverpool drubbing, but two teenagers alongside Bruno Fernandes were unable to stem the bleeding and struggled against Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Rabiot could be the answer to United’s woes, having already admitted that he would like to play in the Premier League one day. “I have always said that I’d like to play in England in my career, I still have that desire,” the France star told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’d like to evolve in the Premier League. It’s the league, it’s the level of play that’s going on, that’s what attracts me most. It corresponds to my qualities. I haven’t got a Premier League team in mind right now. I haven’t chosen a team or anything. It’s a general thing.”

The Italian report claims that Rabiot’s current salary demands have put teams off during contract negotiations. But still without a club through the first portion of the season, he may need to compromise in order to find a new team.

Having found himself out of Didier Deschamps’ most recent France squad, despite being a key member of their World Cup and European Championship wins, United may be the perfect place to put Rabiot back on the international boss’ radar.
