Liverpool and Newcastle United have been put back on red alert as Marc Guehi’s Crystal Palace future is thrown into yet more doubt.

The England international was subject to heavy interest, particularly from Newcastle, during a hectic summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side were reported to have bid four times for Guehi, but Palace stood firm and rejected the Magpies’ advancements.

Palace chairman Steve Parish recently opened up about the summer window, admitting he was surprised to keep hold of Guehi.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the businessman claimed: “I don’t think the window worked out exactly the same format that we thought it would.

“Maybe we thought at the beginning it’d be more likely that Marc Guehi went and we kept Joachim Andersen.

“We accepted that bid [for Andersen] which then made it very difficult really to sell both of our starting centre-backs in one window.

“That’s not to say it wasn’t still an outside possibility that we got to the right number but then Chadi Riad got injured. That doesn’t look quite as bad as it seems but it still left us very light and really made it impossible for us to consider at that point.”

Liverpool had also been credited with interest, yet any move from the Reds, should it arrive, is expected to come next summer instead.

And while the 2025 summer transfer window is just under a year away, both Liverpool and Newcastle might’ve already been boosted by Guehi’s stance on signing a new contract with Palace.

It’s reported by talkSPORT that Guehi isn’t currently pushing to extend his deal with the capital club, which is currently due to expire in June 2026.

If Guehi maintains that position heading into the summer 2025 transfer window, it will almost certainly force Palace’s hand into selling the defender.

What’s more, given it will be the club’s final chance to cash in, it’s likely Palace’s asking price will drop from the rumoured £70million they were demanding this year.

But, if anything, it’s something that will probably benefit Liverpool more, considering Arne Slot’s side will be on the lookout for a centre-back come the end of the season.

Given Virgil Van Dijk will be another year older, Liverpool are expected to start preparing for life without the Dutchman, and Guehi has already been mooted as the ideal long-term replacement.
