Manchester United are reportedly ‘cautiously optimistic’ about striking a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has orchestrated a major rebuild at Old Trafford this summer, with several fringe stars offloaded to pave the way for four marquee arrivals. Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have all arrived, and further incomings are expected.

The Red Devils remain in the market for a midfielder who can play alongside Kobbie Mainoo in both the short and long term. Several options have been explored by the club, with Ugarte cited as the top target on countless occasions.

PSG’s asking price for the Uruguay international has been a sticking point throughout negotiations, with United weighing up alternative ways to strike a deal to secure his services.

According to Sky Sports, talks between the clubs are now progressing and Erik ten Hag’s side are growing in confidence that an agreement can be reached.

The Red Devils are ‘cautiously optimistic’ that they can get a deal over the line before the transfer deadline, with both clubs in agreement that a permanent sale is the best option for all parties.

United have also discussed whether there is a chance that a loan deal could be facilitated, where they would be obliged to sign the former Sporting star in 12 months’ time. PSG have entertained that proposal to this stage.

The Red Devils may need to sell another fringe player before tabling a permanent offer for Ugarte, with several stars firmly in the shop window at Old Trafford. Victor Lindelof is among those who has been tipped to depart, but he is currently nursing an injury which could rule him out of a departure.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho’s future at the Theatre of Dreams continues to hang in the balance as well. Despite putting his differences aside with Ten Hag following their public fallout last season which led to him being loaned out in January, United remain open to parting ways with the winger before deadline day.

PSG are among those who have registered an interest in the former Borussia Dortmund playmaker and there have been reports that a swap deal involving Ugarte could be on the cards, though that speculation has quietened this week.
