Enzo Maresca has already been told which match could be his last in charge of Chelsea, should the Italian coach begin life in the Stamford Bridge dugout on the wrong foot.

Maresca arrives at the capital club amid plenty of chaos both on and off the pitch.

A late surge from then manager Mauricio Pochettino’s side last season was enough for Chelsea to secure a spot in Europe, but only the Europa Conference League - a far cry from what the two-time European champions are used to.

Maresca’s first pre-season in charge of the Blues didn’t exactly go to plan either, with Chelsea managing just one victory across their six outings.

And that’s not to mention the current haphazard transfer strategy being implemented by Todd Boehly and co., with the free-spenders still hoping to wrap up yet more deals between now and August 30.

As a result, former Manchester United star Teddy Sheringham has hinted Maresca’s time in charge could be short-lived, if Chelsea struggle to hit the ground running.

Pointing to Chelsea’s 12th league match of the season - an away game against Maresca’s former club Leicester City - as the potentially fatal one, Sheringham told onlinepoker.ltd: “Even if he does well in the first six games. The next six games after that, if he doesn’t do well, it could be curtains for him, even if he has signed a five-year contract.

Chelsea’s expectations seem to be out of line with what is happening at the club. There are a lot of top teams in the Premier League, it’s not going to be easy for them. I think it’s unrealistic to think they can challenge for the top four or the title after all the changes the owners have overseen.

“The owners are a law unto themselves and if they don't do well in any six-game period, that could be the end of it for any manager in the Stamford Bridge dugout.”

Overall, Sheringham isn’t confident about Chelsea’s chances this summer, with the 51-cap England international adding: “I think there's a lot of uncertainty at Chelsea. They had a big run towards the end of last season and finished in sixth.

“Poch was showing signs of progress, and now the ownership have reset it all again. They will be looking for consistency to improve, but that’s hard to achieve when you make as many changes to the squad and management as they seem to do. I think it will be a difficult season for them again.”

Chelsea kick their Premier League campaign off at home to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
